About Me
From what you’ve seen and read on my website you know quite a bit about my professional life. On this page I’d like to tell you more about myself by sharing some of the other passions that make me who I am.
I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude for all the opportunities that have come my way. I have been surprised time and time again. Most of all I am overwhelmed, day-by-day, for the people who have blessed my life with encouragement, criticism, skill, example, and most of all, love.
Painting
The effects of color, shape, and form give me much pleasure. They always have. As I mess around with colors, spray bottles, palette knives, rags, even falling rain on a canvas outside, it’s all play. Abstract painting relaxes and fills me with surprises. And I don’t have to perform. Some of my paintings serve as background images for this site. The gallery below displays paintings that were engaging processes. Now they are friends, reminders of how they came into my life, motivators to gesso another canvas.
Climbing
Mountains bring me challenge and solace. The solitude heals, the opportunity to immerse in the beauty of the natural world, and the physical challenge of getting to where it’s hard to go, all play a role in making it a significant part of my life.
Lutherie
I’m not a luthier, far from it. Still, my love for classical and flamenco guitars has led me to delve deeper into the processes of how a fine instrument is crafted. A one-month apprenticeship with Brian Burns, a master luthier on California’s Mendocino’s coast, gave me more than I can repay. Brian had dedicated himself to creating the finest classical and flamenco guitars, and he does. In his shop, he taught me about woods, tools and techniques which intensified my appreciation of what goes into the making of excellent instruments. I may never build another guitar, but will always value what I learned from Brian about guitars, excellence, and dedication to one’s craft.
